Being a small business owner myself, I understand the need for marketing. Choosing where you spend your money and how is difficult but it also makes social media a no brainer. It’s free to join, it’s free to post and gives you immediate contact with your customers and clients. But if you haven’t been tweeting and posting on social media with your teenagers or grandkids you may be new to the whole Social Media world.

Choosing which platform works best for your business will come down to your goals. Twitter is great for engagement, Facebook is more personal, Linked In is more conservative and Instagram is great for product based businesses.  Choose 1 or choose them all.

In this post, I wanted to share some of my personal tips for working in social media specifically for Australian Small Businesses.

  1. Post often, but it doesn’t have to be every day. Just be consistent.
  2. People love competitions, if you have a new product try a competition on your business Facebook page to win.
  3. People love quizzes. Make it short, simple but fun and people will share it with their friends.
  4. Don’t just self promote, share, comment and engage with your audience. People will get turned off if you are just shouting “Buy My Stuff” all the time.
  5. If you receive something negative, nip it in the bud. Don’t ignore, respond respectfully, always keep it professional and it will negate any impact the negative comment would have had (most of the time)
  6. Pictures say a thousand words. Why just type words when a picture would say it for you and look better too.
  7. Ask your customers to Follow and Like you to boost your numbers. If you don’t ask, they may not even know you are there.
  8. Promote your Facebook, Linked In, Twitter etc accounts on your website – preferably on the home page

Of course businesses like mine can help you get started but you still need to commit yourself to maintain the momentum.

If 9 million Australians are on Facebook every day, go where the customers are.  It will take time to grow your Likes naturally so follow the tips, be patient and get involved.

With Twitter, Australians are on there but only about 15% are tweeting regularly.  Get your business on Twitter and you may just beat your competition.  Follow those that follow you unless they look like spam accounts and don’t forget to be consistent.

My final tip is make a spot in your day for your social media activity. It may only take you 5 minutes to post a picture of the sunrise where you are, or retweet a news article that is relevant to your product. Make it a habit and you may just enjoy it. Oh yes and I would love it if you Like my page and Follow me on Twitter J, Thanks!
