So the kids are back at school and you have the house all to yourself, ready for you to do what you like with your new found hours! It’s a lovely feeling, and chances are if you’re reading this article right now, you’ve decided to use the opportunity of your kids going to school to start a new life as a work at home mum – otherwise known as WAHM!
Starting life as a WAHM will open you up to a whole new way of doing things. In the past, you probably commuted to work every day and then invested many of your hours, building the business of your boss. As a WAHM, you’re probably running your own business. The buck all of a sudden stops with you, and the world quite literally is your oyster. You can be as successful as you want to be, and you can build a business to suit your lifestyle and your family.
So, what are the best ways for you to adjust to your new life as a WAHM for maximum success?
Allow me to share advice that was handed down to me when I set out on the work from home mum adventure for myself!
Make sure you decide what you want to get out of your business
It’s time not only to plan your business, but the lifestyle you want for yourself and your family. Now that you’re working from home, you’re in a position to create the reality you have always wanted. Make a wish list of what you want, from hours you want to work per week, what sort of work you want to do daily and how much money you would like to make.
Set realistic goals to help you grow your business
Once you know where you want to go with your business, set some realistic goals. Put a date on each goal as well, so you can picture in your mind when you wish to achieve the goals.
Develop an action plan to help you achieve your goals in the time you set
Make a list of all of the things you need to do, in order to achieve your goals.
See your business as a business and not just a hobby
This is of course, if you want your business to be a business and not a hobby. It’s okay to have a business as a hobby though, if you wish. This is entirely up to you. Commit time to your business – it may be every day or just a few days a week. Again, it’s up to you totally.
Plan your week and set tasks to do each day you work
After all, this is a business and you are committing to achieving success every time you mark off a task as completed on your to-do list.
Realise that not everybody is sold on the idea of WAHM’s
As you know, people are opinionated. Some people totally support the concept of mums working from home, yet others only see working from home for mums as a hobby. Realise that opinions are just opinions, and the only one that matters for you is your own opinion.
Create your own support network of WAHM’s
After all, they understand the challenges you’ll face. A support network of likeminded people will help you pursue your goals and celebrate the good and bad that comes with being in business as a work from home mum.
Understand that LOVING what you do is where it’s at
If you love what you do, half the battle of achieving success is already won! So when you do start life as a WAHM, make sure you’re doing something you really love and are passionate about.
Realise that a happy mum = happy family
Don’t fall into the guilt trap that can sometimes appear if people express opinions to you that work from home mums aren’t giving 100% to the family. Some people are stuck in the old ways of mum only doing domestic chores and tasks, and therefore, they are not convinced that mums should be working and earning a living. Again, see this purely as the opinion of another person, and understand that by loving what you do and earning an income from it, you are creating happiness and satisfaction for yourself, that extends to your family too.
So congratulations on joining the ranks of the WAHM! It’s great to connect with you and I look forward to hearing of your success!
