Wedding Photographer Fined And ordered To Pay Compensation

A Newcastle wedding photographer who took money from brides and their families and either failed to turn up to weddings or deliver photography packages has been ordered to pay $14,446 fines and costs as well as $7,500 compensation to four victims.

NSW Fair Trading prosecuted Mark Robert Priems after receiving a number of complaints from angry brides.

Commissioner Rod Stowe said Mr Priems had breached the Australian Consumer Law and heartlessly disappointed brides, grooms and their families.

“In one case where he did actually turn up after being pre-paid the full contract price of $2,750, Mr Priems argued with the bride about the photographs he was taking and failed to take any shots of the bride’s immediate family including her mother,” he said.

“In two other cases, after taking deposits from brides, he failed to respond to repeated requests to confirm bookings and discuss details and then failed to attend either wedding.

“Another bride and her fiancé paid the full amount for a Diamond package service prior to their big day, following which Mr Priems did attend and photograph the wedding.

“However after failing to provide any photographs or respond to repeated attempts to contact him, Mr Priems finally delivered small electronic images of extremely poor quality.”

Mr Stowe said Mr Priems failed to appear in court to answer the charges.

He was convicted in his absence.

“This individual proved to be very evasive with consumers, as well as with Fair Trading investigators,” Mr Stowe said.

“His behaviour was unethical and has caused considerable distress for the families involved.

“Fair Trading will continue to bring offenders like this before the courts.”
