Mums Who Want a Part-Time Job

17 Apr 2008

DEAR BRIDEE: I am currently a stay-at-home mum with three young children, including one-year old twins. Our financial situation has become extremely tight since we had the twins. My husband and I believe it would be best if I return to the workforce after a three-year absence.

Working full time would mean my entire pay cheque would go to pay for childcare so I will get a part-time job in the evenings and weekends. The only jobs I have found with evening flexibility are in restaurants or retail stores, which is fine with me but I am told that I am overqualified or don't have recent experience.

How do I find good part-time jobs in my area? And how should I respond when told I'm overqualified or lack recent experience?

Please help me - I just need to bring in a little extra cash. Who knew it could be so hard to get a part-time job?! - M.C.J.

WHERE TO LOOK. Scan the classified help-wanted ads in your daily and weekly newspapers, including the free papers. Compile a list of potential employers within a nearby radius,  and make direct application with telephone calls when the bambinos are napping and follow up in person when you hear encouraging words. And of course, ask everyone you know where you might look for a night/weekend part-time job.

Major online job boards sometimes list local part-time jobs but you might try the niche board parttimeonline.com

Expand your horizon: As well as restaurants and retail, look at movies, fitness clubs and supermarkets.

WHAT TO SAY. When accused of being overqualified, tell the truth with spirit: "Yes, I am well qualified, thank you. I am mature enough to know that reliability and good judgment matter in a world full of mistakes and costly errors. I know you realize that I will give you excellent value for your payroll dollar. And as the mother of a young family, I need to work the hours that this job offers, nights and weekends -- hours when my husband is available to take care of the kids. I won't disappoint you. When can I start?"

When told that you haven't had recent work experience, meet that objection with enthusiasm: "You know, it's only been three years since I was last in the job market and I have an excellent memory. I recall clearly how to work hard, learn fast and be dependable. My references will tell you what a superior worker I am. I need the money and you need good employees. Can we make a deal?"

As the mum of three young and active children, you've got your work cut out for you. Now all you have to do is find it - and, with your motivation, I'm betting you will. Let me know.
